THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS COLUMN |
|
IMPOSSIBLE!
Is
just a state of mind!
In
the history of man, no one had
ever run the mile in under 4 minutes.
Not once. The Ancient Greeks tried
for years. They even attempted
to motivate their runners by having
tigers chase them. They thought
death was the strongest motivator
of all.
On
May 6th, 1954 an Englishman named
Roger Bannister ran a mile in
3:59:4 at Oxford University, England.
He was the first person in the
world to do so. The next year,
37 other runners all did it. The
following year, 300 runners did
it. Pretty amazing for something
that was once considered impossible.
What motivated Roger Bannister?
More
importantly, what
motivates you to take part in
your booster club and to help
make it a better organization?
Is
it the joy of watching your son
or daughter succeed in an activity?
Is it the opportunity of socializing
with fellow parents and community
supporters?
Is it the satisfaction of knowing
that you are helping a group of
kids stay active, in school and
out of gangs?
Whatever
the reason, whatever it is that
motivates you to take part, I
want to challenge each of you
to make that motivating factor
one that you can spread to others.
Like the light given off from
a single candle, it only shines
bright enough and long enough
to offer a benefit for a very
small area. But you align that
candle with a group of other candles
and the light will magnify to
a level that will benefit an area
much greater than just its point
of origin.
By spreading the light we can
overcome the obstacles that prevent
our clubs and programs from achieving
the level of growth and success
we seek. And by spreading the
light we will cause a new light
to be lit inside of someone else
you will help you to make the
obstacles become smaller and the
opportunities more achievable.
So
remember t he next time your club
runs into a situation and someone
says "that's impossible"
remind them that impossible is
just a state of mind.
I
welcome your emails and look forward
to helping you "come alive
in double 05".
I
wish each of you the best of success.
Happy Boostering!

MOVES FORWARD WITH TECHNOLOGY UPGRADES |
|
We
are proud to announce the recent
partnership between the NBCA and
DuraWorks, an Atlanta based technology
company. This partnership will
provide club and business members
with a wealth of online tools
and resources. Up until this point,
the NBCA has handled all technology
in-house. With the recent announcement
of our National Partner Program
the NBCA was able to work with
DuraWorks to create a partnership
that will ensure the NBCA has
sound, scalable technology for
years to come.
The
NBCA is moving fast forward with
technology upgrades that include
a unique, online package to our
members that is unrivaled by any
other on-line service provided
to booster clubs.
The
partnership will allow the NBCA
to enhance and expand the programs,
services and resources found in
Club Central as well as the tools
and resources found in Business
Central. In the coming weeks members
will be provided with some dramatic
online upgrades including twenty
(20) megabytes of storage for
club data, fully integrated fundraisers
and banner ad sales display and
management, easy to follow, step-by-step
development tools that will allow
the organization the ability to
create its own web site with a
distinctive look that includes
a variety of templates, colors,
graphics and navigation options.
All organizations will also have
access to club management and
event management tools, content
assistance, banner ad sales, guidance
and management and exclusive,
practical fundraising ideas.
We
encourage you to frequent BoosterWorld
as we will post a link that will
allow you to take a test drive
of the new and exciting changes.

OF THE MONTH |

SPIRIT AMERICA
Spirit
America
is both proud and honored to become
a member of National Booster Club
Association. We feel our goals
not only coincide with each others
companies, but more importantly,
those of the hard working booster
clubs created to support our children.
Being a booster club veteran,
raising and encouraging three
children through every middle
and high school sport program
available, I know the challenges
parents, (boosters) have in providing
our kids with the right equipment,
support and encouragement that
all too many times rely on the
all mighty dollar. Those dollars
must be raised through organized
programs. Sales, cars washes,
banquets, you name it.
Spirit
America
was formed to provide a number
of “spirit” –
school-logo’d products,
that can help accelerate these
fund-raising efforts. In surfing
the internet and just plain asking
around, we were lucky enough to
find such a great organization
as National Booster Club Association.
Through working with the obviously
very committed team of NBCA,
Spirit-America’s
goal is to not only make our products,
but our programs available to
all. We have compiled programs
that offer lower than normal minimums,
which will allow teams, bands,
nearly any school organization
to boast their school colors,
name and logo at very affordable
prices. These are all delivered
in a timely and accountable fashion
to meet the intended function.
We
feel we can offer valuable insight,
products and programs designed
by sport and activity that will
ultimately enrich the lives of
our children through fun and rewarding,
fund-raising efforts. If you’re
reading this newsletter, I’m
certain this is your goal as well.
We’re proud to share in
it and intend to help.
Please take time to check out
our product offering (www.spirit-america.com).
We're certain you will find products
that will both excite you and
fit your programs. When you do,
you can order painlessly via fax.
Simply print out the order form,
fill in the pertinent information
regarding your school colors,
select the product you want and
fax it in!
Sincerely,
Steve Greene

MASCOTS |
|
Have
you ever noticed how much
attention costume charters
receive at large sporting
events? There are many benefits
to your school having a
mascot costume.
A
mascot is not limited to
visual attention alone but
through careful planning
and consistent use, it can
portray a character with
definite personality and
purpose.
Character
costumes will be instantly
associated with your sports
teams or school and create
a lasting impression in
the public eye.
A
mascot is very versatile
and can be used in a variety
of applications; generating
goodwill, it provides the
best return on investment
by participating in community
activities, media promotions,
sporting events, parades,
and other local applications.
It
establishes a strong reputation
for your school and creates
a highly visible image.
Now
is the time for your school
to have a mascot character

OF THE MONTH |

Preferred
Seating
Preferred
Seating
has been a Midwest market
leader in stadium and auditorium
seating for 25 years. We
had a request from Notre
Dame University for a stadium
seat that fastens onto a
bleacher, because no one
likes to sit on bleachers
or concrete. We realized
that there was a great need
for this type of seating
in existing facilities with
tight back to back spacing.
A year ago we began manufacturing
our own stadium seating.
As we went from school to
school to see what their
seating needs were, we kept
adding to our stadium seating
designs and applications.
We also offer cushions that
strap onto bleachers, and
fold up, portable stadium
seats. No other seating
manufacturer can offer the
choices of dimensions and
designs that meet the retrofit
needs of existing facilities
like the Champion Seat product
line! Please visit our website
www.preferred-seating.com.
Realizing that our products
could be great fund raisers,
we contacted the NBCA and
put our new seating products
on their website. We now
have over 40 Champion stadium
seating installations in
various colleges and high
schools. Many of these installations
were funded by Booster Clubs,
alumni and other fund raising
groups. Preferred Seating
is the only seating manufacturer
that focuses on the seating
retrofit market; as a result,
we have become a magnet
for schools and athletic
departments needing to raise
money. We have seen schools
make big profits with little
or no effort by doing the
following: make profit on
season tickets with improved
seating. Fans will pay more
for a ticket to sit in a
seat or on a cushion.; Alumni,
parents, teachers, sponsors
or businesses donating seats
or cushions for fundraising;
Purchasing seats or cushions
to rent for a fund raiser.
Our seating is constructed
of the new, no break polypropylene,
a 21st century breakthrough!
Owners of sport and entertainment
venues will not have to
wait anymore for seats that
will not rust. Champion
Stadium Seats will not rust
or chip paint like seating
with steel or cast iron
standards, so maintenance
costs are reduced giving
you the best value for your
money. This plastic is corrosion
and chemical resistant and
can easily be cleaned with
harsh detergent power washing.
Made in the U.S.A., our
no break polypropylene seats
are made of automotive grade
durable strength, high impact
and comparable to steel
in durability giving you
seating that will last for
years to come. Your satisfaction
is guaranteed.

YOURSELF FUNDRAISER OF THE
MONTH |

Center
Court Toss
There are several fundraising
techniques for basketball
game halftimes but they
can be adapted for other
locations. Numbered, rubber
stars are sold and then
the holders of stars line
up around the perimeter
of the gym and toss the
stars at the center of the
court. The closest star
to the center gets a prize
or a percent of the take
on star sales. The kids
love it and there is no
way to predict where the
stars may bounce because
of the 5 points on them.
Variation 1: Tossing balls
of a putty type density
that do not bounce or bean
bags into a bucket at center
court. Variation 2: Tossing
tennis balls (which obviously
will bounce) into a deeper
container such as a garbage
can at center court.

| DEAR
BOOSTER |
|
Dear
Booster,
The parents of our dance
studio are trying to start
a booster club which will
help offset costs of costumes
and competition fees. How
do we get started? Do we
need to setup a non-profit
organization and tax ID
number. What about bylaws,
etc. Any help you can be
would be appreciated.
Thank you Sincerely, Deborah
M.
Dear
Deborah,
Congratulations
on choosing to establish
a booster club. In addition
to helping provide a structure
for raising funds you will
also find that the booster
club can play a very important
role in everything from
providing new equipment,
organizing volunteer support
and bringing public exposure
to your program.
Starting
a booster club is just like
starting any business. First
you must conduct a pre-organizational
meeting, followed by registering
with your state corporation
commission. Initially you
don't need to seek the federal
tax exempt status, just
make sure when you register
with your state you do seek
the non-profit registration.
You will need articles of
incorporation and after
registering you will need
to conduct your first formal
organizational meeting where
you will draft your initial
by-laws. Most
states will also help you
secure the federal tax ID
number or (EIN), which along
with a corporate resolution
will allow you to go and
open your bank account.
I know that much of this
may be overwhelming so you
may want to access the sample
articles of incorporation,
by-laws and how to start
your booster club from the
members section of BoosterWorld.
Tackle one step at a time
and you will have no problems.
Send
us your Dear Booster....
article and we will select
one each month to share
with the readers of Booster
Trends. To submit your email
send to: dearbooster@boosterclubs.org.
