North American Booster Club Association and Kendall AMD™ Team-Up With Local Booster Clubs To Fight The Spread Of ‘Superbugs’ Like MRSA
Among School Sports Teams Across America

Atlanta, GA. October 25, 2010 – Amid growing concerns about the spread of staph infections like MRSA and other antibiotic-resistant bacteria in communities across the U.S., the North American Booster Club Association (NABCA) is teaming up with CanAm Care, the exclusive U.S. marketer and retail distributor of Kendall AMD™ wound care products, to help schools and communities around the country fend off the spread of these harmful bacteria in the gym, on the field and in the locker room.

MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), and other staph infections like it, often begin as a pimple or boil on the skin. They can also spread to other parts of the body, including the bones or lungs, where they can cause pneumonia, other serious complications and even death.

NABCA has partnered with CanAm Care to inform students, parents and coaches about the prevention and care of MRSA infections, and to provide samples of Kendall AMD™ bandages. These bandages are clinically proven to protect cuts, scrapes and abrasions against infection-causing bacteria, including MRSA and other antibiotic-resistant infections.

Together, NABCA and CanAm Care are providing printed brochures about MRSA, product coupons and samples of Kendall AMD™ adhesive bandages to over 5,000 football, basketball and wrestling booster clubs across the country.

“The terrible stories that come to us from across the country spurred the association to take a leadership role in getting the word out about MRSA—and the care you can take to prevent it—which is of growing importance as the spread of antibiotic-resistant infections like MRSA continue to increase in our communities,” said NABCA spokesperson, Steve Beden.

A recent study published in the journal Pediatrics earlier this year showed the number of children hospitalized with MRSA has surged 10-fold, rising from 2 to 21 cases for every 1000 hospital admissions between 1999 and 2008. The study, which included 25 children’s hospitals across the U.S., found that during this 10-year period about 30,000 children were hospitalized with MRSA, and sadly, 374 died.

Up until recently, MRSA was usually spread in hospitals and other health and long-term care facilities. However, in this latest study, the majority of children with MRSA infections acquired them in their communities. Community-acquired MRSA infections are becoming more prevalent in the general population especially among children, athletes and people with compromised immune systems.

“Cleaning and covering cuts, scrapes and other wounds is a key to preventing infections”, says Althea Taite, CanAm Care’s Product Manager for Kendall AMD™ wound care products. “And using a bandage that protects against antibiotic-resistant infections like MRSA is more important than ever before.” Kendall AMD™ adhesive bandages are made to store and carry in first-aid kits, lockers, wallets and purses, glove compartments and medicine cabinets for everyday wound care needs.

The active ingredient in the bandage, polyhexamethylene biguanide or PHMB, helps destroy common as well as antibiotic-resistant forms of bacteria and is also found in everyday items such as contact lens solutions, baby wipes and cosmetics. Because Kendall AMD™ bandages are made with a powerful, yet non-toxic antiseptic, and not an antibiotic, they are also safe for people who have reactions to antibiotics.

Kendall AMD™ wound care products, initially developed for hospitals and other medical facilities, are now used throughout the U.S. The full line of Kendall AMD™ wound care products includes adhesive bandages, bandage rolls, non-stick pads and gauze, and are available at national retail chains and drugstores, including Walmart, Rite Aid, Albertsons, Kerr Drug, Navarro Discount Pharmacy and drugstore.com.
